HV Battery Fundamentals

🔹 What is an HV Vehicle Battery?

High-voltage vehicle batteries are lithium-ion based packs operating between ~400V–800V. They consist of multiple cells wired in series and parallel, managed by a BMS to deliver the power needed for propulsion.

🔹 Chemistry & Types

NMC (Nickel-Manganese-Cobalt): High energy density, common in long-range EVs.
LFP (Lithium Iron Phosphate): Lower energy density but longer cycle life & enhanced safety.

🔹 Degradation Mechanisms

Calendar Aging: Chemical changes over time, accelerated by heat.
Cycle Aging: Capacity fade from charge/discharge cycles, worsened by deep discharge & high C-rates.

🔹 Role of BMS

The Battery Management System monitors cell voltage, temperature, and state-of-charge, balancing cells to maximize performance and safety.

🔹 Tips to Prolong Battery Life
  • Avoid frequent fast-charging.
  • Keep state-of-charge between 20%–80% during daily use.
  • Park in shaded areas to reduce heat stress.
